South Africa

South Africa operates a visitor's permit system for tourism. Citizens of most Western countries — including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and all EU member states — receive a free 90-day visitor's permit on arrival at any official port of entry. No advance application is required.

South Africa has been progressively rolling out an e-visa system for nationalities that previously required embassy visas. Indian, Chinese, Nigerian, and several other passport holders can now apply online at evisa.dha.gov.za before travel. Processing times vary — apply at least 4–6 weeks in advance.

Passport Requirements

South Africa is strict about passport conditions. Immigration officers have refused entry to travellers whose passports did not meet requirements. Ensure your passport has:

  • 📋 At least 6 months' validity beyond your intended departure date
  • 📋 At least 2 blank pages for entry stamps (must be consecutive pages — endorsement pages do not count)
  • 📋 No significant damage — a water-damaged or badly worn passport may be refused

Travelling Through Johannesburg O.R. Tambo

O.R. Tambo International is the main gateway for Southern Africa and a significant African hub. If you are transiting through Johannesburg to another Southern African country, check whether you require a transit visa. Most visa-exempt nationalities do not — but it is worth confirming if your onward destination is outside the SADC region.

Botswana

Botswana is one of the most visitor-friendly countries in the region for immigration. Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and EU member states receive visa-free entry for up to 90 days. South African, Zimbabwean, Zambian, and most SADC passport holders also enter without a visa.

Botswana does not currently operate a widely available e-visa system for most nationalities — those who require visas generally need to apply through a Botswana embassy or high commission in advance. However, for the vast majority of safari travellers, no visa is required at all.

Entry points for the Okavango Delta and Chobe are typically Maun Airport (Okavango, game-viewing flights), Kasane Airport (Chobe), or road crossings from Zimbabwe (Kazungula/Kasane border) and Zambia. The Kazungula Bridge now provides a modern road link between Botswana and Zambia — no more pontoon ferry.

Chobe & Victoria Falls Combination

Many itineraries combine Chobe National Park with Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe or Zambia). The Kasane–Victoria Falls day trip crosses the Zimbabwe border at Kazungula. If you hold a KAZA UniVisa, Zimbabwe border crossings are included. Day-trippers from Botswana into Zimbabwe should check whether their Zimbabwe visa remains valid for re-entry.

Namibia

Namibia is one of Africa's most straightforward countries to visit from a visa perspective. Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and all EU member states enter visa-free for up to 90 days. The country is a popular self-drive destination, and many travellers fly into Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport, pick up a 4×4, and drive south towards Sossusvlei or north to Etosha.

Citizens of India, China, Russia, and several other nationalities require a visa in advance from a Namibian embassy or high commission. Namibia does not yet offer an online e-visa system for most nationalities — advance embassy applications are the norm. Apply 4–8 weeks before travel.

Road Border Crossings

Several major border crossings exist for overland travellers. The most commonly used are:

Noordoewer/Vioolsdrift — South Africa border on the Orange River. Main crossing for travellers entering southern Namibia from the Western Cape.

Ariamsvlei/Nakop — On the main N14/B3 route between Johannesburg and Windhoek.

Ngoma Bridge — Botswana to Namibia (Caprivi Strip / Zambezi Region) for combined Chobe–Namibia itineraries.

If you are driving a rental vehicle across borders, you will need a cross-border permit from the rental company (usually issued automatically at an extra fee). Confirm this before travel — some rental companies restrict cross-border driving entirely.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a key destination for Victoria Falls visitors. Most Western travellers enter Zimbabwe easily — either on a visa on arrival or by purchasing a Zimbabwe single-country visa (USD $30–$50 depending on nationality) or the KAZA UniVisa (USD $50, covering both Zimbabwe and Zambia). Zimbabwe also operates an online e-visa portal for advance applications.

The Zimbabwe e-visa is available at evisa.gov.zw. It is straightforward, takes a few minutes to apply, and is usually processed within 24–48 hours. Having the e-visa printout avoids queuing at the visa-on-arrival counters, which can be slow at Victoria Falls airport during peak season.

Victoria Falls — Zimbabwe Side

The Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls offers arguably the most dramatic view of the main falls — particularly in high water season (February to April). The Victoria Falls town side also has more accommodation options across a range of budgets, and direct access to activities including white-water rafting (grade V+) below the falls.

KAZA UniVisa

If your itinerary includes both the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides of Victoria Falls — or involves crossing between the two countries — the KAZA UniVisa is the smartest option. See the full KAZA UniVisa section below.

Hwange National Park

Many Zimbabwe itineraries combine Victoria Falls with Hwange National Park, home to one of Africa's largest elephant populations. Hwange is accessible by road (~2 hours from Victoria Falls) or by light aircraft. Entry to Zimbabwe on any valid visa covers travel within the country.

Zambia

Zambia is home to the Zambian side of Victoria Falls (Livingstone), South Luangwa National Park — birthplace of the walking safari — and Lower Zambezi National Park. Most Western visitors enter on a visa on arrival (USD $50 single entry) or via the KAZA UniVisa. Zambia also operates an e-visa portal at evisa.gov.zm.

The KAZA UniVisa is strongly recommended for travellers combining the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of Victoria Falls, or making a day trip across the border. At USD $50 — the same price as a single-entry Zambia visa — it offers significantly better value for any multi-country routing.

Livingstone & Victoria Falls Zambia Side

The Zambian side of Mosi-oa-Tunya ("the smoke that thunders") is particularly dramatic in low water season (August–November), when the Knife-edge Bridge walk and Devil's Pool — a natural infinity pool at the edge of the falls — are accessible. Devil's Pool is only accessible from the Zambia side.

South Luangwa

South Luangwa is widely considered Africa's finest walking safari destination. The Luangwa Valley has a strong independent safari culture — many operators fly directly from Lusaka. Entry to Zambia is required; the standard tourist visa covers all national parks within Zambia for the duration of your stay.

Yellow Fever Requirement

Zambia requires a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate from all travellers arriving from Yellow Fever-endemic countries. Unlike some other Southern African nations, Zambia also recommends (and in some circumstances requires) vaccination regardless of transit routing. Carry your Yellow Card at all times.

Mozambique

Mozambique is increasingly added as a beach extension to Southern Africa safari itineraries — particularly the Bazaruto Archipelago (Vilanculos) and Pemba in the north, or the Tofo/Inhambane area from Johannesburg. The country's Indian Ocean coastline offers world-class diving and a complete change of pace after the bush.

Most Western passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport and major border crossings (USD $50–$80 depending on nationality and duration). Mozambique also operates an e-visa system at evisa.gov.mz, which is recommended — the on-arrival process can be slow.

⚠ Cabo Delgado Security Warning: The Cabo Delgado province in far northern Mozambique (Palma area) has experienced significant insurgent activity since 2017. The Quirimbas Archipelago area (Ibo Island, Quilalea) may be affected. Before travelling to northern Mozambique, check your government's current travel advisory. Most tourist areas — Bazaruto Archipelago, Tofo, Inhambane, the south — are not affected and remain open to visitors.

South Africans enter Mozambique visa-free for up to 30 days, making weekend and short break trips from Johannesburg or Nelspruit very common.

The KAZA UniVisa

The KAZA UniVisa is one of the most useful travel documents in Southern Africa. If your itinerary touches both Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe and Zambia — or involves crossing between the two countries more than once — this is the visa to get.

What the KAZA UniVisa Covers

  • ✓ Entry to Zimbabwe
  • ✓ Entry to Zambia
  • Multiple crossings between Zimbabwe and Zambia
  • Day trips from one side of Victoria Falls to the other
  • ✓ Transit through Botswana (Kazungula/Chobe area — day trips only)
  • ✓ Valid for 30 days from date of issue

What It Does Not Cover

  • ✗ Extended stays in Botswana (transit only)
  • ✗ Entry to Namibia, South Africa, or other countries
  • ✗ Second entry into the same country twice without re-crossing (single-entry per country per crossing)
  • ✗ Travel beyond the 30-day validity window

Who Can Purchase the KAZA UniVisa

The KAZA UniVisa is available to passport holders of most Western countries including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and EU member states. Citizens of certain African nations, China, India, and other countries may not be eligible — they must purchase separate Zimbabwe and Zambia visas instead.

Where and How to Purchase

On Arrival: Victoria Falls Airport (VFA), Zimbabwe

Available at the visa desk on arrival. Pay USD $50 in cash. USD is the most reliable currency — carry exact change or small bills as change is not always available.

On Arrival: Livingstone Airport (LVI), Zambia

Also available on arrival at Livingstone. Same price and process as Victoria Falls. USD cash preferred.

Land Borders: Kazungula, Victoria Falls Town Crossing

Available at major land border crossings in the Victoria Falls/Chobe corridor. The Kazungula Bridge crossing between Botswana and Zambia is the most modern, with efficient immigration facilities.

"The KAZA UniVisa changed our entire itinerary. We could cross between the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides of the falls three times in two days without any extra paperwork. It's incredible value."

— Traveller account, Victoria Falls, 2024
⚠ Current Status Note: The KAZA UniVisa has occasionally been suspended and reinstated over the years. Confirm it is currently operational at kazavisa.travel or through your tour operator before relying on it for your itinerary.

Yellow Fever Requirements

Southern Africa itself is not a Yellow Fever zone. The disease is endemic in equatorial and West Africa, and in parts of South America. Southern African countries require proof of vaccination only in specific circumstances — primarily if you are arriving from (or transiting through) an endemic country.

Country Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirement Notes
South Africa Required if arriving from endemic country Applies if any transit in endemic country within 6 days of arrival
Botswana Required if arriving from endemic country Direct flights from non-endemic countries are unrestricted
Namibia Required if arriving from endemic country Includes transit through endemic countries
Zimbabwe Required if arriving from endemic country Carry certificate; may be checked at land borders
Zambia Recommended regardless of origin Zambia more strictly enforces certificate checks; vaccination recommended for all visitors
Mozambique Required if arriving from endemic country Northern regions (near Tanzania) have stricter checks

Endemic Countries: Common Transit Hubs

The most common Yellow Fever-endemic countries that Southern Africa travellers might transit through include Kenya (Nairobi/NBO), Ethiopia (Addis Ababa/ADD), Nigeria (Lagos/LOS), Tanzania (Dar es Salaam/DAR, though Tanzania is only partially affected), Uganda, Rwanda, and most of West Africa. If your routing takes you through any of these hubs from an endemic source country, you need your Yellow Card.

Yellow Fever Certificate: Practical Notes

  • 📋 The Yellow Fever vaccine is valid for life (WHO changed the booster requirement from 10 years to lifetime in 2016)
  • 📋 Carry the original yellow card (International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis — ICVP). Photocopies or photos on phones are sometimes not accepted
  • 📋 The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before travel to be valid for entry requirements
  • 📋 Obtain your vaccination from an approved Yellow Fever vaccination centre — only approved centres can issue the official certificate
  • 📋 If you cannot receive the vaccine for medical reasons, obtain a medical exemption certificate from your doctor — this may be accepted at some borders

Travelling to Southern Africa with Children

Southern Africa is a wonderful destination for families with children. However, South Africa in particular has strict documentation requirements for minors that have caught many families off guard at the airport. Read these requirements carefully before travel.

South Africa: Requirements for Children Under 18

  • 📋 Own valid passport — Every child must have their own passport. No exceptions, including infants.
  • 📋 Unabridged birth certificate — Full birth certificate showing both parents' details. Short-form certificates are not accepted.
  • 📋 Both parents travelling together — No additional documents beyond the above (though you may be asked to prove the child is yours).
  • 📋 One parent travelling alone with child — Parental consent affidavit from the absent parent, notarised, plus the absent parent's passport copy.
  • 📋 Child travelling with non-parent guardian — Consent affidavits from both parents, passport copies of both parents, and proof of guardianship relationship.
  • 📋 Single parent (sole custody) — Court order confirming sole custody, or death certificate of absent parent.

Other Southern African Countries

  • Botswana: Children must have their own passport. Birth certificates are not routinely required but may be requested at officer discretion.
  • Namibia: Own passport required. Namibia follows similar principles to South Africa regarding consent documents for unaccompanied minors or single-parent travel — carry documentation as a precaution.
  • Zimbabwe & Zambia: Own passport required. Birth certificate may be requested. Less strict enforcement than South Africa, but documentation is advisable.
  • General rule: Always travel with notarised consent letters and certified copies of birth certificates. It is far easier to have unnecessary documents than to be turned away at the border.
⚠ Affidavit Requirements for South Africa: The consent affidavit must be notarised (signed before a Commissioner of Oaths, Notary Public, or equivalent in your home country). A template can be obtained from the South African Department of Home Affairs website. The document must include the absent parent's contact number and must not be older than 3 months at time of travel.

Multi-Country Routing: Practical Tips

Most Southern Africa itineraries involve two or more countries. Here is what experienced travellers know about managing visas, passport stamps, and border crossings across a multi-country journey.

Check Passport Stamp Counts

Southern Africa multi-country trips generate a lot of passport stamps — especially if you cross borders multiple times. South Africa requires a minimum of two blank pages; ensure you have enough throughout your trip, not just at the first entry point. If your passport fills up mid-trip, you may face significant difficulty.

Carry USD Cash for Visas

Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mozambique visa fees are almost exclusively charged in USD at the border. Card payments are rarely available at land crossings. Carry at least USD $100–$200 in small denominations. EUR and GBP are accepted at some crossings but at worse rates.

Apply for e-Visas Before You Fly

Even where visas are available on arrival, applying online in advance saves time, avoids queues, and ensures you have documentation in hand. Zimbabwe's evisa.gov.zw and Zambia's evisa.gov.zm both have straightforward online processes. Processing typically takes 24–72 hours.

90-Day Rolling Limits

Many countries in the region permit 90 days per visit, but enforce a 90-days-within-any-12-month-period rule. If you plan to spend extended time across multiple Southern African countries, count your days carefully — especially South Africa, which monitors this actively.

Cross-Border Vehicle Documents

Driving a rental vehicle across borders requires a cross-border permit (issued by the rental company) and the vehicle's registration documents. Some rental companies do not permit cross-border travel at all — confirm this before booking. Hire companies at major airports generally accommodate South Africa–Namibia, South Africa–Botswana, and similar common crossings.

Keep Digital Copies

Scan or photograph your passport, visa approvals, travel insurance, yellow fever certificate, and all booking confirmations. Store copies in cloud storage accessible from your phone. Losing physical documents in a remote location is not a theoretical risk in Africa — it happens, and digital backups can be lifesaving.

"We crossed seven borders on that trip. The secret? Advance e-visas for Zimbabwe and Zambia, USD cash in a money belt, and every document — passport, birth certificate, consent letter — laminated and in a folder. Not once were we delayed at a border for more than ten minutes."

— Jurga Rubinová, Full Suitcase, on her 17,607 km Southern Africa overlanding journey

Visa FAQ

The most frequently asked visa questions from travellers planning their Southern Africa itinerary.

No. British and American passport holders receive a free visitor's permit on arrival in South Africa, valid for up to 90 days. No advance application is required. You will receive an entry stamp at the port of entry — this is your permit. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months' validity and two blank pages.

The KAZA UniVisa is a combined USD $50 visa granting entry to both Zimbabwe and Zambia, with unlimited crossings between the two. It is absolutely worth getting if your itinerary includes both sides of Victoria Falls or involves crossing between Zimbabwe and Zambia at any point. It costs the same as a single-entry Zimbabwe or Zambia visa, so there is no reason not to get it if you're eligible.

If you are flying directly from Europe, North America, Australasia, or East Asia to Southern Africa, you are very unlikely to need a Yellow Fever certificate. The requirement only applies if you are arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever-endemic country — mainly equatorial and West Africa, and parts of South America. Zambia is an exception: it recommends vaccination for all visitors regardless of origin. Always carry your certificate if you have been vaccinated.

Every child under 18 must have their own passport. You will also need an unabridged (full) birth certificate showing both parents' details. If only one parent is travelling, a notarised consent affidavit from the absent parent is required, along with a certified copy of the absent parent's passport. These rules are strictly enforced — travellers have been turned away at the airport for non-compliance. Apply for the unabridged birth certificate from your home country's records office well in advance, as processing can take weeks.

All Southern African countries require at least 6 months' passport validity beyond your intended departure date. South Africa also specifically requires two blank visa pages (not endorsement pages). Check these requirements carefully before travel — renew your passport well in advance if needed. Airlines may also refuse boarding if your passport does not meet destination country requirements.

Yes, but you need permission from the rental company and a cross-border permit (usually issued by the rental company for a fee). Not all rental companies allow cross-border travel — confirm before booking. Common permitted crossings include South Africa to Namibia, South Africa to Botswana, and Zambia to Zimbabwe. You will also need the vehicle's original registration documents (not a copy) at border crossings.

Yes. South Africa offers an e-visa for Indian passport holders at evisa.dha.gov.za. The application requires standard documentation including a passport scan, photograph, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, bank statements, and return flight details. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before travel. The e-visa has significantly simplified the process compared to the previous embassy appointment system.
